Students must meet the minimum academic standard in coursework completed at East Georgia State College. Those who failed to do so are placed on Academic Warning or Academic Probation or Academic exclusion, as appropriate. Only grades earned at East Georgia State College are considered in determining Academic Standing.
What are the Types of Grade Point Averages (GPA)?
Institutional GPA: Consist of courses taken at East Georgia State College only. Students who repeat a course will have the first attempt excluded and only the last attempt of the repeated course will count in their institutional GPA. This GPA is used in determining graduation eligibility as well as a student’s Academic Standing (i.e., academic warning, academic probation, or academic suspension). All students must have at least a 2.00 Institutional grade point average (GPA) to satisfy degree GPA requirements.
Transfer GPA: Consist of courses that have transferred in from Prior colleges attended by a student.
Cumulative GPA: The average of all grades earned in college level work for institutional and transfer course work.
Regents GPA: The average of every grade received at East Georgia State College including repeated courses. This cumulative GPA is used in determining eligibility for scholarships.
What is Academic Good Standing?
Academic Good Standing – A student who maintains a 2.00 Institutional GPA or higher is considered to be in Academic Good Standing with the college.
What is Academic Warning and Probation?
Academic Warning – A student who has attempted 17 or less credit hours and falls below the 2.00 institutional GPA will be placed on academic warning.
Academic Probation – A student who has attempted 18 or more credit hours with an institutional GPA below 2.00 will be placed on academic probation.
Students who are placed on Academic Warning or Academic Probation will receive a cautionary letter from the Office of the Registrar alerting them of the less than satisfactory academic performance at a end of a semester.

What is Academic Exclusion?
Academic Exclusion Term (one semester) – A student is placed on an Academic Exclusion Term when their institutional GPA falls below a 2.00 following a semester in which they were placed on academic warning or probation in a previous semester with an institutional GPA below 2.00.
Academic Exclusion Year (one year)* – A student is placed on an Academic Exclusion Year when their GPA falls below a 2.00 following any semester that a student was placed on academic exclusion term.
*Students who are placed on an academic exclusion year must complete a Former Student Application form upon return to the institution.
East Georgia State College does not accept transfer credit from another institution while a student is on any exclusionary academic standing from East Georgia State College.
Appeal for Reinstatement After Exclusion
For students who have experienced a non-academic extenuating circumstance related to the semesters in which their GPA is below a 2.00 may submit an application for an Academic Appeal. For consideration of an appeal, students will need to submit the Academic and Financial Aid Letter of Appeal Application found on their student portal along with a typed one-page letter describing their situation, and supporting documentation must be supplied along with a completed Academic Success Contract (PDF) from the office of retention.

Appeal Deadlines – Three (3) appeal deadlines are provided for students prior to the start of each semester. Students can locate these dates on the academic Calendar. Students must submit their appeals by the deadline in order to receive a timely decision from the committee.
Appeals submitted after the last deadline will be reviewed as time permits.
